Product Description

The Brewster Buffalo was a unique aircraft with the war time Order of Battle of the Royal Australian Air Force. Only 17 examples found their way in the RAAF inventory, all of the ex- Dutch machines. However, they were not the only Buffaloes the RAAF operated. Both 21 and 453 Squadrons flew RAF Buffaloes against the Japanese in Malaya. The Buffalo remains the subject of heated debate: sections of the US Navy and Marine Corps actively hated the tubby little carrier based fighter following its poor performance at Midway. Initially hailed as another superb fighter in the vast arsenal of democracy, then condemned as a totally inadequate design, the aircraft had a history of contradictions. Designed as a carrier based fighter, it saw combat from land bases; produced for America and her allies, its greatest success came in the hands of the Finns (a kill ratio of 26:1), then a co-belligerent of Nazi Germany. Both Australia and New Zealand managed to produce aces flying the Buffalo! The British and Dutch achieved a kill ratio of 2:1, as did the Australians. To an expanding RAAF, the Buffalo was a "curate's egg"; not willing to use it as a front line fighter following their experiences in Malaya, the RAAF instead turned their attention to converting it to photo reconnaissance.

An extensive photo gallery shows Australian Buffaloes and is supported by a portfolio of drawings showing colour schemes and important details. Two full colour profile drawings are included. Four bonus colour chips are included, brushed out from real paint, not printed, and matched to FS standards. Data tables cover colour schemes, national markings, and a fleet list. The relevance of US manufacturers attempts to match RAF paint specifications is discussed. RAAF technical instructions and orders regarding camouflage schemes are examined in detail and finally, the modeller can peruse a chapter covering available kits and accessories.

All photographs in the book are black and white half-tones of exceptional clarity. The book is laser printed, using a desktop publishing system and is spiral bound to allow the modeller to lie it flat on the modelling bench when using it. The book is protected by a stout cardboard cover at the rear and a clear plastic cover at the front. The book is made up of over 120 printed pages and is printed on 80 gsm tight weave paper. The book weighs approximately 500gms. "Buffalo Down Under" is published in a limited edition of 500 copies. Each book is printed to order, signed by the author and numbered.
